Steve Coll blows apart all the simple minded narratives we have had about the 1980s Afghanistan War. It is carefully research and carefully referenced book and more than worthy of the Pulitzer Prize the author received for it. It tell us the story of the institutions that created and fuelled the war. There were many actors in the war, some more malevolent than others. Yet, they got entangled for strategic reasons. You cannot simple blame one country or a group of people. It is not more complicated than that. These kind of things happen when multiple actors find themselves in zero-sum game. How they get there is a difficult question. Of course, once the momentum is underway, it becomes very tough of reverse the changes. It is clear fro reading the book that the global community has not learnt the lessons. For all we know, we may be creating another Afghanistan right now, which will haunt us with its gaunt presence in the future.
